A 28-year-old San Francisco man died while on duty at San Francisco International Airport following a workplace accident that authorities are treating as unintentional.
The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as John Lacayanga, who was pronounced dead after the incident occurred on Sunday evening.
According to airport officials, emergency crews were dispatched around 7 p.m. to a vehicle service road located between Terminal 3 and the International Terminal’s Boarding Area G. When firefighters arrived, they discovered Lacayanga beneath a cargo pallet he was reportedly towing at the time of the accident.
Investigators said the incident involved only one vehicle, and no other workers or motorists were injured. Representatives from the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health responded to the scene and conducted interviews with Lacayanga’s employer as part of the investigation.
At the time of his death, Lacayanga was employed by Dubai National Air Travel Agency, commonly known as dnata, an international company that provides ground handling, cargo, and aviation-related services worldwide.
In a statement released through an airport spokesperson, the company expressed sorrow over the loss and said it is cooperating fully with authorities to determine what led to the accident. The company also stated it is offering support to Lacayanga’s family during this time.
Sheriff’s deputies initially responded to the scene before transferring the case to the coroner’s office. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident remains ongoing.
