Bernedine Spann, 32, was killed Wednesday night in a devastating wrong-way crash on U.S. 82 in Lee County, Georgia, an incident that also claimed the lives of two of her children.
Authorities said the collision occurred when a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction struck the Spann family’s car. Bernedine Spann and her 13-year-old daughter, Ja’Leah Spann, were pronounced dead at the scene. Her 7-year-old son, Jaxton Spann, was transported to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries days after the crash.
The Georgia State Patrol reported that the wrong-way vehicle was driven by 41-year-old Sherita Goddard, who is suspected of being under the influence at the time of the crash. Goddard and a passenger believed to be her daughter were injured and hospitalized. Officials have not yet released details about potential charges.
Family members and friends expressed deep grief and anger following the loss. A close friend of Bernedine Spann said the deaths were preventable and called for full accountability, stating the decision to drive impaired placed innocent lives at risk.
Randolph County Schools confirmed that Ja’Leah was an eighth-grade student and Jaxton was in the second grade. The school district announced that counseling and support services would be provided to students and staff affected by the tragedy.
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist the family. According to the fundraiser, Bernedine Spann is survived by another son who was not in the vehicle and is now mourning the loss of his mother and siblings.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
