Fatal Bennet, Nebraska UTV crash death of Charles Kohl – Obituary
Charles Kohl, a 7-year-old student from Bennet, Nebraska, died Monday afternoon following a tragic UTV rollover accident, according to local authorities and school officials.
The crash occurred just after 4 p.m. near the area of Tyler and Cottonwood streets in northeast Bennet. Emergency responders from Lincoln, Bennet, and Hickman were dispatched to a residence after reports of a serious off-road vehicle incident.
Lancaster County Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said Charles was pronounced dead at the scene. His 9-year-old brother, who was operating the UTV at the time, suffered a broken leg and was treated for his injuries. Investigators stated the UTV made a sharp turn before rolling.
A neighbor who had been riding an ATV nearby witnessed the crash and immediately sought help by alerting his mother, who called 911. Authorities said the boys had been collecting tools and supplies to build a treehouse when the accident occurred.
Officials noted that there is no minimum driving age for operating such vehicles on private property. The investigation into the crash continues.
The Bennet-Palmyra School District confirmed Charles was a second-grade student at Bennet Elementary. In response to the loss, District OR-1 schools were closed Tuesday to allow students and staff time to grieve and access support services.
Community members have organized prayer gatherings at Bennet Community Church and a meal train to assist the Kohl family as they cope with the devastating loss.
