Joaquin Angel Aguirre, a 23-year-old man from Los Angeles, lost his life Wednesday night following a deadly wrong-way collision on Highway 14 near Inyokern, according to authorities.

Officials from the Kern County Coroner’s Office and the California Highway Patrol said the crash occurred at about 10:15 p.m. on January 28. Investigators determined that Aguirre was driving his vehicle in the wrong direction on Highway 14, just north of Cow Heaven Road, when it struck a semi-trailer truck head-on.

CHP reports indicate Aguirre was operating a 2007 Toyota Corolla northbound in the southbound lanes. The Corolla collided with a 2014 Freightliner that was traveling southbound at the time of the crash. Aguirre was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of the impact.

The incident remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol as officials continue to review the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
