Fatal Gordon, Douglas County snowmobile crash death of Marvin Sloper – Obituary

Marvin Sloper, a 68‑year‑old resident of Centuria, Wisconsin, lost his life after a snowmobile accident in the Town of Gordon late Thursday night. The single‑vehicle collision occurred on Trail 35 near the bridge where the trail crosses the St. Croix River, according to authorities.

Deputies with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office say the crash was reported at about 9:08 p.m. on January 29. Sloper had been traveling south on the trail with two other riders when his snowmobile struck a guardrail on the bridge.

The impact threw him from the machine and down an embankment into nearby trees. His companions later found his unoccupied snowmobile just south of the bridge and began looking for him.

First responders from the Gordon volunteer fire department and other emergency crews located Sloper off the trail and carried him back up, but lifesaving efforts were not successful.

The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the circumstances of the crash. This incident is one of several snowmobile‑related fatalities reported in the state in recent weeks.
