Fatal Westwood, Los Angeles car crash death of Deris Renoj – Obituary
Deris Renoj, 42, has been identified as one of three people who lost their lives after a vehicle plowed into a 99 Ranch Market grocery store in the Westwood area of Los Angeles, authorities confirmed Friday.
Investigators said the collision happened Thursday afternoon when an elderly woman driving along a busy roadway struck a bicyclist and then continued forward, crashing into the front of the market. The car entered the store and came to a stop in the bakery section, where several people were inside at the time.
Two of the victims killed in the crash were employees of the grocery store, while the third, Renoj, was a customer. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office reported that the other two people who died were men, ages 55 and 30.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene and found multiple victims injured, some of whom were briefly pinned beneath the vehicle. Fire officials said four injured men were taken to nearby hospitals, including two 35-year-olds listed in critical condition and two others, ages 37 and 38, who were reported to be in fair condition.
The bicyclist who was initially hit and the driver involved in the crash both declined medical treatment at the scene, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The driver, described as a woman in her 70s, has been cooperating with authorities and is undergoing a medical evaluation.
Los Angeles police stated that there is no indication the incident was deliberate. Detectives are focusing on whether a medical emergency may have caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
Residents in the Westwood neighborhood said the intersection where the crash occurred has long been considered hazardous, and the tragedy has left the community shaken as the investigation continues.
