Fatal Round Lake Beach, Illinois child abuse death of Markell Pierce – Obituary

Markell Pierce, 8, of Round Lake Beach, Illinois, died on Friday after suffering severe abuse and neglect at his home in the Cedar Villas Apartments. Authorities reported that the boy had been physically beaten, punched, struck with a belt, malnourished, and placed in a cold shower before becoming unresponsive. First responders performed CPR at the scene before paramedics transported him to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he was pronounced dead.

The Lake County Coroner identified Pierce on Monday, and investigators say the abuse was ongoing. His mother, 33-year-old Dominique Servant, and her boyfriend, 38-year-old Joey L. Ruffin, have been charged with first-degree murder and child endangerment causing death. Prosecutors allege the couple subjected Markell to repeated physical and mental abuse, including forcing him to hold weights above his head, limiting his food intake, and recording videos of the punishments.

Pierce’s 10-year-old sister, who was also subjected to abuse and neglect, is receiving care and protection. Law enforcement agencies, including the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force and Round Lake Beach Police, continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic case. Authorities emphasized the importance of reporting suspected child abuse to prevent such devastating outcomes.
