Eboni Anderson was shot and killed Tuesday morning outside Palmetto Elementary School in Palmetto, Georgia, according to authorities. The deadly incident unfolded just before midday and led to an immediate lockdown at the Fulton County school.
Police responding to reports of gunfire arrived to find Anderson deceased near the front entrance of the school. Officials confirmed that no students or school employees were harmed during the shooting.
As a precaution, more than 550 students inside the building were safely moved to Bear Creek Middle School, where they were later released to their families. School officials worked with law enforcement to ensure an orderly dismissal.
Investigators later located the suspected shooter in Middle Georgia. Authorities said the suspect attempted to flee but was taken into custody after a short chase that ended in a vehicle crash.
The suspect was identified as 39-year-old Christopher Loris Ates. He was arrested in Houston County and charged with offenses including reckless driving, attempting to flee law enforcement, and second-degree cruelty to children. Officials stated that he is also facing additional charges in Warner Robins, along with pending charges in Fulton County related to the death of Eboni Anderson.
The investigation into the Palmetto shooting remains ongoing as authorities continue to process evidence and prepare additional charges.
