Fatal Jefferson County structure fire death of Eugene C. Cyphert Sr. – Obituary

Eugene C. Cyphert Sr., 71, of Sykesville, Pennsylvania, died in a house fire on Monday morning, February 9, in Jefferson County. The coroner, Greg Furlong, pronounced Cyphert deceased at the scene at 7:43 a.m., while the official cause of death remains under investigation.

Emergency crews arrived at the South Park Street residence at 7:24 a.m. to find the home engulfed in flames with Cyphert still inside. Firefighters from multiple Jefferson County departments, including Sykesville, Reynoldsville, and Big Run Area Volunteer Fire Companies, responded, along with assistance from Clearfield County units from DuBois City and Brady Township.

First responders battled the fire in subzero conditions, with wind chills dropping to -16 degrees, remaining on site for over two hours before clearing at 9:42 a.m. A Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal is leading the investigation into the cause of the fire, with local fire officials also involved.

No other injuries were reported in the incident. The community mourns the loss of Cyphert, remembering him as a longtime resident of Sykesville.
