Fatal Round Lake Beach shooting death of Markell Pierce – Obituary

An 8-year-old boy, Markell Pierce, has died after suffering severe abuse and malnourishment, with his mother and her boyfriend facing criminal charges. Authorities in Round Lake Beach, Illinois, arrested 33-year-old Dominique Servant and 38-year-old Joey L. Ruffin, charging both with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of child endangerment causing death.

Police responded Friday afternoon to a home where Markell was found unresponsive. Despite immediate CPR and rushed transport to a nearby hospital, he was pronounced dead. Officers noted the child showed signs of malnourishment and had visible bruises, prompting the involvement of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force.

Investigators uncovered evidence indicating Markell had endured long-term neglect, physical harm, and emotional abuse. An autopsy confirmed the effects of prolonged malnourishment and physical trauma. Authorities also reported that Markell’s 10-year-old sibling was hospitalized due to similar signs of abuse.

Court records and media reports revealed that the children had been constantly monitored at home with cameras in their bedrooms and were confined unless given permission to leave, including to use the bathroom. Prosecutors said Ruffin disciplined Markell by striking him with a belt and forcing him to hold a heavy weight for long periods, while Servant allegedly participated in the abuse. Some of the mistreatment was reportedly recorded on Ruffin’s cell phone.

Round Lake Beach Police Chief Ryan Rodriguez said the boy’s death has deeply affected both the department and the community. He emphasized the importance of unity and support during such tragedies and called on residents to honor Markell’s life by committing to protection, care, and love for one another.
