Fatal Tumbler Ridge, B.C. school shooting death of Kylie May Smith – Obituary
Kylie May Smith, 12, was identified by her family as one of the victims who lost their lives in the mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia on February 10, 2026. Her aunt, Shanon Dycke, described the family’s heartbreak on social media, saying their “world has crumbled” after losing the young girl.
A GoFundMe campaign established in the aftermath of the tragedy stated that funds would support Kylie’s mother, Desirae, her brother Ethan, and other family members with travel costs and memorial arrangements to honor her memory. Dycke emphasized that Kylie was an innocent and beloved child who “didn’t make it out” of school that day.
Authorities confirmed nine people died in the attack, including the suspect, 18-year-old Jesse van Rootselaar. Among the victims were one teacher and five students found inside the school, including three 12-year-old girls and two boys aged 12 and 13. One additional student was discovered in a stairwell, while others were found in the school library.
Outside the school, van Rootselaar’s mother and 11-year-old stepbrother were also found dead at their home. Officials reported that the suspect died at the school from what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury. Investigators continue to probe the motive behind the shooting.
