Fatal Austin, Texas assault death of Robert Garcia – Obituary

Austin police say Robert Garcia, 66, died days after suffering severe injuries during a violent encounter at his East Austin residence in late January. The incident ultimately led to a murder charge against a 38-year-old man.

Officers were called to a welfare check at a property in the 1000 block of Springdale Road at about 6:46 p.m. on January 31. When police arrived, they found Garcia lying on the ground outside, unconscious and bleeding heavily from serious head injuries.

Garcia was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, where he remained for several days. Despite medical treatment, he died from his injuries on February 4.

Investigators identified Raymond Ware as the suspect in the assault. Police said Ware allegedly confronted Garcia at his home and attacked him. After the incident, Ware barricaded himself inside a nearby apartment and refused to come out.

Austin Police Department SWAT officers, along with aggravated assault detectives and crime scene specialists, responded to the standoff and were eventually able to take Ware into custody. Authorities also reported that Ware attempted to escape while being held at the main police station.

Ware was initially charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Following Garcia’s death, police obtained an arrest warrant upgrading the charge to murder on February 10. The investigation remains ongoing, and anyone with information has been asked to contact Austin police or submit a tip through Capital Area Crime Stoppers.
