Fatal Montgomery, Alabama police pursuit death of Tristan Hollis – Obituary

Authorities and family members confirmed that Tristan Hollis, a teenager, was killed last September during a high-speed police chase in Montgomery, Alabama. Hollis was not the subject of the pursuit when the crash occurred, leaving his family grieving and advocating for changes in law enforcement pursuit policies.

Tristan’s mother, Rachel Moore, spoke to state lawmakers urging support for Senate Bill 120, known as the Tristan Hollis Memorial Act. The legislation would restrict police pursuits to situations where officers have probable cause and the suspected crimes involve murder, kidnapping, or human trafficking. The bill also calls for the creation of coordinated pursuit policies across local, state, and county jurisdictions.

Moore emphasized that her advocacy aims to prevent other families from experiencing similar tragedies and to ensure officers are held accountable while serving and protecting the public.

Some law enforcement representatives expressed concerns that the bill could hinder officers’ ability to respond to crimes effectively, warning that narrowing pursuits to only certain violent offenses could be exploited by offenders. Lawmakers indicated they would continue discussions on the bill’s specifics and explore additional training-based measures before voting.

Senate Bill 120 has not yet been voted on, and no date has been set for when the legislature might consider it further.
