Fatal Diana police shooting death of Victor L. Craighead – Obituary

Authorities have identified 47-year-old Victor L. Craighead of Harrisville as the man fatally shot by a trooper in Diana, New York, on March 27, 2026.

The incident occurred after troopers responding to a trespassing report discovered human remains in two burned vehicles along Alpine Road. Craighead emerged from a nearby home and opened fire on responding officers with a long gun. Trooper Timothy Dovi, a nine-year veteran assigned to the special operations response team, fired back, striking Craighead. Despite emergency aid, Craighead was pronounced dead at the scene.

The human remains found in the burned cars have not yet been identified, and autopsies are being conducted by the Broome County Medical Examiner’s Office. State Police, the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and the Major Crimes Unit continue to investigate the case alongside the Attorney General’s Office.
