Fatal Chula Vista, California car crash death of Ignacio Pedroza – Obituary

Ignacio Pedroza, a 60-year-old Chula Vista resident, was among two victims who lost their lives following a devastating crash that sent their vehicle into the Sweetwater River. His wife, Monica Pedroza, 53, also died as a result of the incident.

Authorities say the couple was traveling in their Jeep when it was struck from behind by another vehicle, causing it to veer off the roadway and plunge into the river below. The crash occurred along the transition from State Route 54 West to Interstate 5 South in National City during the early morning hours.

According to the medical examiner, both victims suffered blunt force injuries and later drowned after the vehicle entered the water, indicating they initially survived the impact. Emergency crews responded after a 911 call was placed around 12:53 a.m. Monica Pedroza was pulled from the wreckage and pronounced dead shortly after despite lifesaving efforts. Ignacio Pedroza remained trapped until the vehicle was recovered hours later, at which point he was declared deceased.

Investigators say the driver of the other vehicle, identified as 61-year-old Douglas Guyton, is suspected of driving under the influence. He was taken into custody at the scene and is now facing murder charges in connection with the crash.

Officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
