John Newton, 28, of Sacramento, has been identified as the driver who died in a fiery crash Tuesday near the Travis Air Force Base Visitor Center parking lot. His passenger, Tavion Knox, 31, of Oroville, also died in the incident, according to the Solano County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office.

The vehicle was being pursued by Napa County sheriff’s deputies after fleeing an attempted traffic stop on Highway 12 east of Highway 29 shortly after midnight. The chase ended approximately 15 minutes later when the car crashed at the Visitor Center parking lot and ignited into flames.

The Solano County Major Crimes Task Force is handling the investigation due to the involvement of law enforcement personnel. The main gate at the airbase was closed for nearly 13 hours and reopened around 1:45 p.m.

Authorities continue to review the circumstances of the chase and crash. Family and friends remember Newton and Knox during this tragic loss, and condolences have been extended to their loved ones.
