Authorities have confirmed the identity of a man fatally shot in Stockton earlier this week. The San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as 43-year-old Derrick Lee Walthall, a resident of North Highlands.
The shooting occurred around 12:35 a.m. on Monday, March 30, near the intersection of South Commerce Street and West Main Street. Stockton police officers responded to reports of gunfire and discovered Walthall suffering from a gunshot wound at the scene.
Emergency responders transported him to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators arrived shortly after to examine the scene and gather evidence related to the incident. Officials confirmed that Walthall’s death is being treated as a homicide.
This case marks the sixth homicide recorded in Stockton since the start of 2026, according to police. The investigation remains ongoing.
