Fatal Fresno, California car crash death of Martha Hernandez – Obituary
A tragic crash in Fresno early Monday claimed the lives of a mother and her young son after their vehicle was struck by a suspected DUI driver. Authorities have identified the victims as 41-year-old Martha Hernandez and her 9-year-old son, Adrian Hernandez.
According to Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto, the incident occurred around 2 a.m. as Martha Hernandez was turning left from southbound Highway 41 at McKinley Avenue near Fresno Street following a family Easter gathering in Madera. A Honda Pilot allegedly ran a red light and broadsided her Dodge SUV, sending it across multiple lanes, over a median, and into a nearby canal.
The SUV floated approximately 500 feet downstream before coming to rest. Fresno Fire Department crews, including water rescue teams, pulled Martha Hernandez from the submerged vehicle and began CPR. She was transported to a hospital in critical condition but later died.
Authorities initially thought only the mother was in the vehicle. When family members inquired about her son, a search ensued. Using drones, emergency crews located Adrian Hernandez about two miles downstream near Ferger Avenue and Arroyo Street.
Police reported that the driver of the Honda Pilot fled the scene, and the suspect remains at large. Investigators are seeking information from anyone who witnessed the crash or may have relevant details.
