Fatal Richland County, South Carolina car crash death of William Vazquez-Hernadez – Obituary
A tragic wrong-way collision on Interstate 77 in Richland County claimed the lives of two men early Sunday morning. One of the victims has been identified as 26-year-old William Vazquez-Hernadez of Lexington. The second victim, 62-year-old Mark McCormick of Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania, also died in the crash.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 4:05 a.m. on Easter Sunday near the 10-mile marker of I-77, close to the Fort Jackson Boulevard interchange in Columbia.
Authorities reported that a 2023 Toyota SUV was traveling northbound when it collided head-on with a 2017 Chevrolet pickup truck that was driving south in the northbound lanes.
Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have not yet confirmed which victim was operating each vehicle at the time of the crash.
No additional injuries were reported. Investigators have not released information regarding seatbelt use or why the pickup truck was traveling in the wrong direction.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol, along with the Richland County Coroner’s Office, continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
