A 75-year-old man, William James Rogers, has died following a violent incident at a residence in Burleson, Texas, where gunfire broke out during an emergency response to a structure fire.
Emergency crews were dispatched around 3 a.m. to a mobile home in the 5400 block of County Road 605 after reports of a fire. Firefighters from multiple departments, including local volunteer and county units, arrived on scene to battle the blaze.
While crews were working to put out the fire, additional gunshots were reportedly heard near the home at approximately 2:40 a.m., prompting responders to investigate the area further.
Authorities say Rogers was located at the property armed with a handgun, and a gunfire exchange followed. The circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain under active review, with the Texas Rangers leading the investigation.
During the chaotic scene, a sheriff’s deputy suffered facial injuries caused by flying debris or shrapnel. He was taken to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth, treated, and later released.
Officials have not yet determined how the fire started or what led to the initial gunfire involving Rogers and emergency personnel.
