Michael Garcia, a 41-year-old Marine veteran, was killed in a fatal shooting in New Orleans after being struck by gunfire while driving during a violent exchange between two vehicles.
Authorities in New Orleans said Garcia was an unintended victim caught in the middle of a roadway gun battle that erupted Tuesday afternoon. Investigators reported that shots were exchanged between occupants of two vehicles when one of them crashed into Garcia’s car. He was found inside his vehicle with a gunshot wound to the head and was rushed to a hospital, where he died about an hour later.
Police said the gunfire originated from a dispute involving multiple individuals, with evidence of shell casings recovered near the scene and a second location a short distance away. Witnesses described a chaotic scene with heavy gunfire before emergency crews arrived.
A suspect, identified as 48-year-old Terrence Leavell, was later arrested in connection with the incident. Investigators said a firearm was recovered at his residence, and he faces charges including manslaughter and weapons-related offenses. Authorities also noted he is a convicted felon and was prohibited from possessing a gun.
According to court information, Leavell told investigators he opened fire after believing a group had threatened his nephew. He was on parole at the time of the shooting, officials added.
Residents in the area reported hearing dozens of shots during the confrontation, which left the neighborhood shaken. One business owner nearby described the scene as extremely dangerous and chaotic as gunfire rang out in the street.
Family members and friends remembered Garcia as a devoted father, respected veteran, and well-loved member of the local craft beer community. His employer closed temporarily in his honor, describing him as someone known for kindness and strong connections with others.
His partner said he had been on his way to visit her when the shooting occurred, and loved ones have called for greater community support and violence prevention in the wake of his death.
