Fatal Knoxville crash death of Walter Humphrey

Walter Humphrey, a 96-year-old Knoxville resident, died after a vehicle plowed into Shannondale Assisted Living on Saturday, according to police reports.

Authorities say 24-year-old Eleasah Williams was behind the wheel of the car that crashed into the facility, striking Humphrey. He did not survive the impact. The community and his family are now remembering the man behind the tragedy.

His granddaughter, Crystal Braeuner, described Humphrey as a kind and loving figure who had lived a full life. Born on April 29, 1929, in Knoxville, Humphrey spent his years in East Tennessee and worked as an electrician for over four decades at Y-12, where he also served on the emergency squad.

Braeuner shared memories of her grandfather, saying he epitomized what it meant to be a grandpa. She added that he had a deep love for western films, and even though she never enjoyed them much herself, she plans to watch them in his honor.

Humphrey had lost his wife Ruth prior to his death, and the family finds comfort in the belief that the two are now reunited. One family member reflected that he “went to sleep that night and woke up in the arms of Jesus and his wife.”

Braeuner hopes to live her life with the same grace and peace that her grandfather showed, remembering him as a grateful and peaceful man who was dearly loved.

Plans for a memorial or celebration of life have not yet been announced.
