Fatal Orangeburg County hit-and-run crash death of Martell Riley

Martell Riley, a 37-year-old man from Orangeburg, was killed in a hit-and-run crash early Sunday morning in Orangeburg County, South Carolina.

Authorities say Riley was struck on Belleville Road near Pasture Lane, roughly five miles north of Orangeburg. The South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that his body was discovered around 5:40 a.m.

When first responders arrived, Riley had no identification on him, prompting officials to release a public call for help in identifying him. The coroner’s office completed an autopsy on Tuesday, and his identity was confirmed and announced later that week.

Officials stated Riley died from blunt force injuries sustained in the collision. The driver involved in the crash fled the scene, and investigators are still working to locate the vehicle.

The suspect vehicle may be a Toyota or Lexus and is believed to have damage to the undercarriage and lower front end. No eyewitness accounts or further vehicle details have been confirmed.

The Highway Patrol is urging drivers to be vigilant and watch for pedestrians, while also reminding walkers to wear reflective or bright clothing and avoid walking in the roadway.

The investigation remains ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
