Fatal Chicago mass shooting death of Taylor Walker
Chicago authorities report a tragic mass shooting incident occurred in the River North area, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries. The violence erupted just before midnight on Wednesday outside the Artis Restaurant and Lounge located at 300 West Chicago Avenue.
A vehicle is believed to have fired shots into a crowd celebrating a mixtape release party hosted by rapper Mello Buckzz. The shooter’s vehicle then fled the scene. According to police reports, eighteen individuals were struck by gunfire, with at least four losing their lives.
The first confirmed victim is Taylor Walker, a 26-year-old South Side native who worked as a hairstylist. Her mother, Sharonda Booth, expressed devastation outside Northwestern Memorial Hospital, stating, “I’ve buried two children, not trying to lose my daughter. I just ask God: Please make sure my baby’s OK, please.” Walker was reported to be receiving treatment at another hospital before being transferred.
Devonte Terrell Williamson, a 23-year-old from Chicago, was pronounced deceased at Stroger Hospital according to police spokespersons. Leon Andrew Henry, a 25-year-old Chicago resident, also succumbed to his injuries at Stroger.
Another deceased victim, Aviance Drexler, was a 27-year-old health care worker. Her uncle, Kelvin White, described her as “smiling, happy, excited” just before the shooting. Drexler was receiving treatment at Stroger before she passed away. “You can’t make this up; I just saw her last night before the party. She was all dressed up… and now here we are today,” White shared.
The victims included two men, ages 24 and 25, who were also taken to Stroger hospital. Three other victims were transported to hospitals in critical condition while one was listed in serious condition. Ten additional individuals received treatment in good to fair condition, and three were treated and released.
Chicago Police officials, including Director of Community Policing Glen Brooks, were present at Northwestern Memorial Hospital Thursday morning offering support to grieving families. The Medical Examiner’s Office is processing identifications.
As of Thursday, no suspects have been apprehended, and authorities have not determined a motive. Sources indicate multiple shooters may have been involved. Hospitals reported ongoing treatment for numerous patients following this devastating event.
