Fatal Callahan Falls drowning death of Penny Marie Nelk
The official responsible for determining causes of death in Laurel County confirmed the identity of the woman who died following an apparent drowning incident near Callahan Falls on Friday. The woman was identified as 63-year-old Penny Marie Nelk from Danville, Illinois.
Further details regarding the incident were released later by the local law enforcement agency. According to their findings, a man was driving an all-terrain vehicle, specifically a side-by-side type, which apparently turned over in the water. The woman involved could not escape the vehicle in time and tragically drowned.
Initial reports from emergency services indicated that the woman and a man were attempting to cross a water-filled area at Wildcat Offroad Park when the vehicle they were in became unstable. Despite efforts by the man to free the woman from her seat belt, he was unable to do so before the incident occurred. Medical personnel pronounced the woman dead at the scene.
The county’s official investigator confirmed the death was due to drowning and not other factors. The incident is currently being treated as a non-criminal matter, with an official investigation ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the vehicle’s overturn.
