Brownsville authorities have confirmed the identity of the deceased from the weekend incident as 42-year-old Johnny Hughes. The fatal shooting occurred shortly after midnight on Sunday near the intersection of Glenmore Avenue and the Powell Playground area.

Investigation leads point to the event unfolding during an open-air gathering. Upon police arrival, two individuals were discovered, one suffering from multiple leg injuries from gunfire and the other exhibiting a stomach wound from a gunshot.

Medical transport resulted in the 42-year-old Hughes being admitted to the hospital, where his condition tragically deteriorated. The 41-year-old companion also received treatment but remains under medical observation. A local resident, Anthony Mitchell, expressed sentiment about the incident, noting, “Forty-two years old is serious. Few people reach that age here. It’s common, and that’s the most upsetting part, especially when younger people are involved.”
