A well-known Kansas City area chef has been identified as the man killed in a single vehicle accident in Cass County this past Sunday morning. Brent Gunnels, 38, was employed as a chef at The W, a popular downtown Lee’s Summit cocktail lounge. The establishment shared a heartfelt statement regarding his passing, noting his significant impact on the culinary scene and his valued presence at their venue. “He was a shining star within the culinary field and a dream colleague to have working at The W,” the announcement stated.

Prior to joining The W, Mr. Gunnels built a diverse resume working at several notable restaurants, including Il Lazzarone, Clay & Fire, Julep, Tree Haus Cafe, and Freshwater, as listed on his professional profiles.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s official accident report, Mr. Gunnels was operating his vehicle at approximately 2:00 a.m. in Freeman, Missouri. The crash report indicates he lost control and veered off the right side of the roadway, subsequently striking an embankment. The vehicle became airborne, impacted a rock bluff, overturned, and ultimately came to a stop. Mr. Gunnels was pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency responders.
