Fatal Huntington Beach collision death of Kolby Aipa
Huntington Beach authorities identified the individual killed in Saturday night’s fatal collision as 20-year-old Kolby Aipa. Known widely for his connection to the surfing world, Aipa was reported to be riding an e-bike on the Pacific Coast Highway.
According to the Huntington Beach Police Department, Kolby was being towed by a friend driving a Toyota pickup when he lost control of his e-bike. Emergency dispatchers received a collision report shortly after 10:00 p.m. near the PCH and Seapoint Street intersection.
Upon arrival, officers found the vehicle’s driver unharmed, but Kolby was unconscious and in critical condition on the roadside. Medical personnel provided emergency treatment, transporting him to a nearby hospital. Despite life support efforts, Surfer Magazine reports Kolby passed away from his injuries on Tuesday.
Preliminary investigation findings indicated the pickup driver was not impaired. No arrests were immediately pending following the ongoing traffic investigation. Authorities invited witnesses to contact HBPD Traffic Investigator S. Flynn at 714-536-5666.
The victim is the grandson of renowned surfboard designer Ben Aipa, a pioneer of the “sting” design who established Aipa Surf in 1970. Ben Aipa was celebrated for shaping boards for championship winners and his own competitive achievements. Aipa Surf shared remembrances on social media the day after Kolby’s death, calling him a “sweet boy.”
Aipa Surf’s tribute noted Kolby’s emerging reputation as a local surfer sponsored by prominent brands and his membership in the Huntington Beach Board Riders club. The family business paid tribute to Kolby’s character, highlighting his capacity for kindness and his embodiment of Aloha.
The Pai family, proprietors of Huntington Surf and Sport, initiated a fundraising effort to assist the Aipa family following the tragic incident.
