Fatal Richmond shooting death of Angel Montano
Richmondside reports that two members of the city’s police department have been identified as the officers responsible for the fatal shooting of a suspect. According to documents provided to the publication, Nicholas Remick and Colton Stocking were the officers who shot Angel Montano, a 27-year-old United States Marine, following reports of him being armed with a knife and posing a threat to residents.
One of the two Richmond police officers who took the life of 27-year-old Angel Montano recently was also involved in the fatal shooting of another suspect just six months prior. Richmondside obtained official documents confirming that officers Nicholas Remick and Colton Stocking ended Montano’s life after he allegedly charged at the officers with what they initially believed to be a knife.
Richmondside reached out to the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office about the recent incident involving Angel Montano but was informed that the office had limitations regarding information they could share. A spokesperson for the district attorney’s office stated that once their investigation concluded, they would release a public report detailing their findings.
The officers involved in the incident were described as having “less than five years on the force” by the Richmond police chief during a public appearance. Department officials indicated they would release body camera footage from the incident within a short timeframe.
Both Remick and Stocking have been assigned leave status following their involvement in the recent shooting. Stocking joined the department in May 2023, while Remick began his service in January 2023. The officers are currently being investigated by multiple agencies including the California Department of Justice, the Richmond Police Department’s internal review division, and the city’s oversight panel.
Further complicating matters, Richmondside reports that one of the officers, Nicholas Remick, faces two separate legal actions alleging police misconduct. These cases, which were filed within the past year, stem from incidents that occurred while Remick was on duty.
According to available records, Remick and another officer were identified as the individuals responsible for the fatal shooting of a 51-year-old man in February. This earlier incident involved a suspect wanted on domestic violence charges who was found living near his estranged family.
Dispatch audio reviewed by the publication suggests the officers pursued the suspect for approximately 45 minutes through challenging conditions, including dark, wet grass and railroad property. The officers reported seeing the suspect holding what they believed to be a weapon before initiating the fatal shooting.
A commenter questions the publication’s reporting methods and approach to law enforcement coverage, noting that investigations referenced in the article remain ongoing and not publicly available. The commenter draws attention to the difference between internal department reviews and criminal investigations, suggesting that the publication may be drawing conclusions before full investigations are completed.
The incident follows a pattern of recent fatal shootings involving Richmond police, raising questions about officer conduct and department procedures. The full circumstances of each incident continue to be investigated by multiple agencies.
