Fatal Saline County car crash death of Mattix Sandifer
A tragic collision in Saline County resulted in a subsequent accident involving members of the Illinois State Police. The initial incident happened on Illinois Route 34, located one mile west of Harco Road, shortly before 2 a.m. on August 8. Two individuals involved were transported by helicopter to a regional medical center, while Mattix Sandifer, identified as residing in Gallatin County, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Approximately three hours later, around 5 a.m., a second accident took place. At that time, the patrol vehicle driven by two Illinois State Police troopers was struck. The driver of the squad car was Sandra Kahl, a 66-year-old resident of Thompsonville. Both troopers were outside their vehicles but remained unharmed.
Kahl was cited by the Illinois State Police for failing to adhere to the Move Over Law and for speeding, specifically for not reducing her speed to avoid the accident.
