Emergency services were quickly dispatched to the Midwest Training and Ice Center in St. John around 10 p.m. on Friday after reports of an individual in an unresponsive state. Upon arrival, the responding team discovered that onlookers had already begun administering CPR to the man, who was later confirmed to be Det. Aaron Amptmeyer. Medical personnel provided continued aid during the transport to St. Margaret Mercy Hospital in Dyer, but despite all efforts, the officer passed away.

Aaron Amptmeyer, a member of the St. John Police Department, was described as a distinguished and decorated law enforcement professional. His career path included roles with the Gary Police Department from 2005 and the Dyer Police Department until 2018, after which he joined the St. John force. He advanced through various ranks, starting as a patrol officer, progressing to tactical officer, detective, and ultimately commander of the Northwest Regional SWAT Team.

In a statement released following the incident, St. John Police Chief Steven Flores expressed deep sorrow, noting Amptmeyer’s significant contributions to the force and his impact on mentoring new officers. He emphasized the officer’s passion for his team and his role as a dedicated father, while extending heartfelt condolences to his family.
