**Fatal Amargosa Valley shooting death of Troy Plascencia**
The Nye County Sheriff’s Office reported that a man armed with a machete was killed by a deputy in Amargosa Valley. Sheriff Joe McGill detailed the incident during a video briefing posted on the department’s Facebook page.
According to the sheriff, Troy Plascencia, aged 36, approached Deputy Michael Short, also 36, while holding a large knife and refused commands to surrender the weapon. Short subsequently shot and killed Plascencia.
The incident began when deputies received a call on Wednesday morning regarding a potential suicide threat at a residence. The caller, later identified as Plascencia’s girlfriend, informed dispatch that Plascencia was distressed and possibly armed inside the trailer.
Dispatch advised the woman to distance herself from Plascencia while deputies prepared to respond. Deputy Short arrived at the scene shortly after and encountered Plascencia outside the residence.
Body camera footage, reviewed by the sheriff’s office, shows Plascencia walking towards Short with the knife and a bottle of alcohol. Short verbally warned Plascencia to retreat and drop the weapon multiple times.
When Plascencia ignored the commands and continued his advance, Short fired two shots. Plascencia immediately collapsed after being struck. The full bodycam footage of the shooting was not included in the video briefing shared on Facebook.
Prior to the briefing, the sheriff’s office had mentioned that the initial reports indicated Plascencia had approached the deputy brandishing a weapon.
Deputy Michael Short has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation by the district attorney. Sheriff McGill stated that the office will not release any additional information about the case.
