The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office sergeant passed away on Saturday following an incident involving a hay baler near Cheney. According to the Washington State Patrol, this collision transpired on Interstate 90 close to Four Lakes before daybreak.
The authorities identified the deceased individual as Sgt. Kenneth Salas, aged 59, who was from Spokane. According to the troopers, a portion of a load consisting of hay bales detached from a truck and trailer bound for Spokane and obstructed the left lane.
Sgt. Salas, upon stopping his patrol vehicle to assist in clearing the obstruction, activated emergency lighting and a directional marker. The Washington State Patrol reported that a motorcyclist failed to decelerate and collided with the sergeant’s patrol car while attempting an overtaking maneuver from the left side. Subsequently, this motorcyclist made contact with Sgt. Salas.
Emergency medical services transported Sgt. Salas to Sacred Heart Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Throughout his 34 years of service in law enforcement, Sgt. Salas had a varied career path with the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office. He commenced his professional journey as a Spokane County Corrections Officer before transitioning to a deputy role with SCSO. Various sources indicate his work encompassed different assignments within the sheriff’s office, including patrol and service as a school resource deputy.
He is survived by his wife and his extended relatives. The Washington State Patrol is currently conducting an investigation into the crash.
