Fatal Charlotte car crash death of Peter Jacob Didier
Charlotte authorities reported a fatality and an injury resulting from a head-on collision occurring on I-277 in the Uptown area shortly after the conclusion of the first preseason game for the Carolina Panthers.
Emergency medical services were dispatched to a vehicle accident on I-277 near Exit 1E, located close to Bank of America Stadium, around 2:45 a.m. Saturday. Responding officers encountered a red 2006 Honda Civic and a black 1996 Ford Explorer, both with significant front-end damage. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police confirmed these were the only vehicles involved and stated the drivers were the only individuals inside them.
The operator of the Ford Explorer, identified as a 57-year-old man, was transported to a nearby hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. Tragically, 32-year-old Peter Jacob Didier, driving the Honda Civic, was pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency responders.
Charlotte police indicated their preliminary findings suggest Didier was traveling against the flow of traffic in the southbound lanes of I-277 when he collided head-on with the Ford Explorer. The driver of the Ford was assessed by law enforcement and found to be sober at the time of the incident. Police have not yet determined whether Didier was under the influence or exceeding the speed limit during the collision.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation placed a closure order on I-277, extending past Exit 1D (S. Mint Street), until approximately 8:30 a.m.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have confirmed this incident is currently under investigation.
