Fatal Lillington shooting death of Danny Richards, Sabrina Richards, and Clara Richards

Deputies responded to a triple homicide scene in Lillington, North Carolina, following a report from a child inside the residence where three individuals were found injured by gunshot. The 911 call originated from a 10-year-old resident who was said to be unharmed by the events unfolding at the home. According to law enforcement, the minor indicated that multiple family members had been shot earlier in the day.

Local news affiliate CBS 17 reported earlier in the day that authorities discovered three people suffering from gunfire injuries inside a house located at Kentucky Derby Lane in Lillington. Two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while the third person was transported to a hospital for medical treatment.

The investigation revealed that the third victim succumbed to the injuries sustained during the shooting incident on Wednesday. Identified by deputies as 57-year-old Danny Richards, his 54-year-old spouse Sabrina Richards, and his 74-year-old mother Clara Richards, the trio was found at the scene of the deadly attack. The shooting occurred during a birthday celebration for Sabrina Richards, according to preliminary reports from authorities.

The 15-year-old male under investigation is the nephew of the deceased couple. Deputies located the suspect in a wooded area along Highway 87 and Nursery Road in Spring Lake late Tuesday night after he fled the crime scene in a vehicle. Charges filed against the teenager include three counts of first-degree murder. He is currently being held at a detention facility in North Carolina.

Danny Richards and his wife Sabrina, aged 54, were prominent figures in the Genesis Grace ministry, with Danny serving as its bishop. The church was known for its community outreach efforts, particularly assisting homeless individuals. Both the Richards family members had prior military experience, with Danny having retired after a 30-year career and Sabrina following a 14-year service.

A representative from the church described the family as deeply religious and dedicated to helping others. “They were God-fearing people who always helped anyone in need,” a church member stated. “Our church provided meals for the homeless every month, and they opened their doors to support the community. Sometimes, there are limits to what one can do.”

The family friend added, “This is a nightmare. It’s incredibly difficult to accept what has happened.” The tragedy has left the community in shock, particularly given the victims’ contributions and the close-knit nature of their church.
