Fatal Wichita Falls car crash death of Madeleine Blanco-Garcia
The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed the identity of the person killed in a tragic collision on U.S. Highway 287 occurred on Wednesday, August 13th. The victim was identified as 52-year-old Madeleine Blanco-Garcia from Dumas, Texas, and she was taken to United Regional Hospital where she was pronounced deceased later that evening.
Around 8:30 p.m. local time, multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene located at the Rifle Range Road exit on the northbound stretch of the roadway. Responders included the Wichita County Sheriff’s Office, parts of the Texas Highway Patrol, and representatives from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
A spokesperson for the Texas DPS explained the circumstances of the accident. They reported that the driver of a silver Ford Edge lost control of the vehicle. The car veered off the main road and ended up in the center median. The driver attempted to correct the path, but this overcorrection caused the vehicle to return to the travel lane, which was currently closed because of ongoing construction activities. Subsequently, the Ford Edge collided with an unoccupied safety device, known as an attenuator, placed there for the roadwork.
Although the driver involved in the initial incident was not injured, the passenger, Madeleine Blanco-Garcia, suffered critical injuries. Despite the medical efforts at United Regional Hospital, she was ultimately pronounced dead from her trauma.
Investigators from the Texas DPS are currently examining the scene and reviewing available evidence to determine the full details of what happened and to understand the factors that led to the collision.
