Steven Menefee dies in fatal Clairton explosion
The second death connected to the devastating blast at the U.S. Steel Clairton Coke Works has been officially identified.
According to reports from the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office, Steven Menefee, a resident of East Huntingdon Township aged 52, was pronounced deceased at the scene. His body was recovered from the wreckage following the powerful explosion.
Further information reveals Timothy Quinn, another man from East Huntingdon Township who was 39 years old, also lost his life in the incident. The explosion resulted in multiple casualties, with ten individuals sustaining injuries. Currently, three of these injured persons remain hospitalized under medical care. In response to the tragedy, a fundraising page has been established by the USW local 1557 union to support the affected families.
The initial blast, which occurred around 10:50 a.m. on Monday, was exceptionally powerful. It triggered a sequence of smaller explosions nearby and generated shockwaves powerful enough to be felt throughout the surrounding community. Despite extensive investigation, no definitive explanation has been provided for the ignition of this catastrophic event.
