Fatal Wicomico County car crash death of Dean Alexander Dennison
A Seaford resident, identified as Jay Richard Bynum, received a prison term of thirty years after being found guilty of causing a fatality while driving under the influence. The sentencing took place following a jury trial spanning three days on June 18th.
On the early morning of May 19th, 2024, a law enforcement official from the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office encountered a severe accident on Route 13, located in Wicomico County. The crash, which happened near Lukes Road, involved a head-on collision covering approximately six miles.
Investigators reported that Bynum was driving recklessly into oncoming traffic, leading to the deaths of three individuals from New York. The victims were later confirmed to be Dean Alexander Dennison, aged twenty; Sierra Rain Merchant, aged nineteen; and Grayson Dennison, who was just one year old.
Tests revealed that Bynum’s blood alcohol content was significantly above the legal limit, specifically one and a half times the maximum allowed. The Wicomico County State’s Attorney, Jamie Dykes, issued a statement condemning the incident, emphasizing that the tragedy could have been prevented. Dykes noted that Bynum’s impaired driving had devastating consequences, and the court’s sentence represents the maximum possible under the law.
