Fatal Mendocino County drowning death of Robert Samuel James
Mendocino County authorities have confirmed the identity of a 66-year-old man, Robert Samuel James from Los Angeles, whose death resulted from drowning in the South Fork Eel River close to the Reggae on the River festival earlier this month. The initial determination of cause of death is accidental drowning, with the final verdict pending further examination.
Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Captain Quincy Cromer informed SFGATE that the man identified is Robert Samuel James. Toxicology tests and a full autopsy are scheduled to offer a conclusive explanation for his passing. Officials reported that preliminary findings do not indicate involvement of alcohol or drugs in this incident.
The body of Robert Samuel James was located on August 2nd by a member of California Trout, an organization dedicated to managing aquatic ecosystems. The discovery was made in a secluded section of the river, approximately 1.4 miles from the Reggae on the River event location in Piercy, Mendocino County.
According to Captain Cromer, an ongoing investigation revealed that James and a companion had traveled to the region intending to operate a vending business at the festival. It remains unclear whether James attended the festival itself, as he was discovered without a festival admission band.
Captain Cromer stated, “Based on my conversation with the festival organizer, access for them was not permitted, though they did go to the area.”
James was not listed as a missing person with Mendocino County authorities. It is possible he might have been reported missing in another jurisdiction. The Reggae on the River festival, which took place in Humboldt County, marked its return after a five-year absence. This year’s performers featured notable artists such as Queen Omega and Charly Black.
