Fatal fire death of Tayvon Dawson in Sussex
Virginia State Police closed General Mahone Highway Sunday after a multi-vehicle collision left two people dead. All traffic lanes on Route 460 have since been reopened.
Officials arrived at the scene on Route 450 shortly after 1:50 p.m. responding to reports of a serious accident. Upon their arrival, authorities discovered that the two drivers involved in the crash had died. Troopers stated that their preliminary investigation revealed the occupants of the 2015 Jeep Patriot suffered fatal injuries.
Preliminary findings indicate the incident began when the driver of a 2010 Ford Fusion crossed into the westbound lane for reasons currently unknown. This collision occurred head-on with a vehicle traveling eastbound. Following the impact, the Ford Fusion experienced an immediate fire, tragically leading to the death of its driver.
Tayvon Dawson, who was 27 years old and from Henrico, has been confirmed as the driver of the 2015 Jeep Patriot. Police have not yet released the identity of the passenger in the Jeep, who was transported via medical helicopter to Virginia Commonwealth University with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Ford Fusion remains unidentified, and notification of next of kin has not occurred. Law enforcement has determined that neither alcohol nor speeding contributed to the incident.
