Fatal Kansas City shooting death of Teandre Gibson
Kansas City authorities reported a deadly overnight incident involving two minors under 16. Police were dispatched to the 1700 block of E 97th Street shortly before midnight on August 17. A witness informed officers that arguments were occurring in a nearby parking area before shots were discharged.
Several individuals involved in the incident fled the scene, while two people sought medical attention at a local hospital due to gunshot wounds. The Kansas City Police Department confirmed that the two victims were both under the age of sixteen, consisting of one male and one female. The male victim, identified as fourteen-year-old Teandre Gibson, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The female victim sustained injuries that were medically determined to be non-life-threatening.
An investigation into this fatal shooting is underway by homicide detectives, who currently have no suspects in custody. The number of individuals involved in the altercation remains unclear.
Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson issued a statement on the platform formerly known as X, describing the incident as “a tragic loss” and appealing to parents to “teach our children that no disagreement is worth a life.” “Early this morning, our community experienced another tragic loss when an argument turned into gunfire, taking the life of a child under 16 and injuring another. This comes just a week after we lost another teenager to senseless violence. Our hearts are with all of these families,” Johnson expressed.
