Fatal Lewiston car crash death of Elizabeth Camacho
A man hailing from Africa and lacking authorization to live in the United States was operating a 2013 Buick Verano when he caused the death of a Massachusetts woman in Kennedy Park on Friday afternoon. Officials stated that this individual held a Maine driver’s permit.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) apprehended Lionel Francisco, who was 31 years old, on the same day. His arrest was carried out by the Lewiston Police Department. Currently, he is being held at the Strafford County Correctional Facility in New Hampshire and is waiting to be deported back to Angola.
According to a press statement released by the Lewiston Police Department, the accident happened around 12:55 p.m. on Friday. A caller alerted emergency services by reporting that a woman was hit by a vehicle while she was walking near City Hall in Kennedy Park.
When police arrived at the scene, they observed that the Buick had crossed the curb on Park Street and entered Kennedy Park before stopping. The pedestrian, identified as 48-year-old Elizabeth Camacho from Cambridge, Massachusetts, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center initially. Later that day, she was transported by helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland. Tragically, she passed away due to her injuries later that evening.
Lionel Francisco stayed at the location and provided information to the investigators. It was noted that he was driving with a learner’s permit at the time of the accident.
Maine allows individuals without citizenship to obtain driving permits and licenses, but they are required to submit additional documentation compared to citizens.
The Lewiston Police Department is continuing to look into the incident through their Accident Reconstruction Team and Criminal Investigation Division.
