The official determination that the driver’s state or actions were not factors in the collision has been made.

An ongoing investigation continues into the incident.

The Songhees Nation confirmed the death of Bernice (Bea) Sam on Friday.

According to a statement released through social media by the nation’s leadership, Bernice was “a dedicated and vibrant presence within our Nation — a cherished family member, a respected friend, and staff member of the Nation. Her unwavering commitment to the well-being of our youth touched the lives of many far beyond our community.”

Sam held a position within the nation’s education department. Responsibilities included assisting with the Songhees’ after-school homework club and overseeing students who used the bus to attend Craigflower Elementary School and Shoreline Community Middle School.

The Songhees Education Department stated that Sam was a strong advocate for students and their families. “Her kindness, generosity, and genuine heart made it easy to love her and we feel grateful to have had her as a colleague and a friend,” the department added.

On Monday, flower arrangements were placed along the designated crosswalk at Admirals and Maple Bank roads.

Sam is survived by five children. An online fundraising initiative, backed by the Songhees Nation, aims to raise $9,000 to assist the family. The page on gofundme.com/f/4uyt6q-the-sam-family can be accessed for contributions.
