Howard County authorities confirmed the death of a 93-year-old woman late Friday following a collision that involved a county police officer. The incident occurred in Howard County, where the officer, who was not in uniform, was exiting a parking area.

Officials stated the officer was departing from a spot on Dobbin Road in Columbia around dawn when they accidentally struck a pedestrian who was walking in the designated travel lane of the parking facility. The timing of the crash was approximately 6:45 a.m., and the pedestrian was not in a vehicle at the time.

The elderly woman, identified as Georgia Louise Floyd by officials, was transported to the Shock Trauma facility at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Despite the medical attention received, she later succumbed to her injuries. Police have indicated that the investigation into the crash is still in progress.

Howard County Police confirmed that the officer involved, Matthew Mehrer, an experienced member of the department with 18 years of service, has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the ongoing inquiry. The officer is assigned to the Technical Support Section.
