Fatal Newberry County, S.C. shooting death of Rose Kewlani
Law enforcement officials have confirmed the identity of the woman who was killed during a shooting incident on Monday, September 4th, along Interstate 26 in Newberry County, South Carolina.
According to Newberry County Coroner, Laura Kneece, Rose Kewlani, a resident of West Columbia, was shot at approximately the Exit 82 area on Monday. The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office has arrested 45-year-old Wilfrido George Luna and charged him with murder.
Deputies reported that Luna allegedly shot Kewlani before fleeing across multiple lanes of the highway towards the Mid Carolina Country Club. Sheriff’s spokesperson Stephen Biddix detailed that Luna had attempted to signal down a nearby tractor-trailer, though the truck was not involved in the shooting itself.
Further information was provided by Newberry County officials. Foster, likely referring to a sheriff’s representative, commented on the involvement of the tractor-trailer in the incident. The suspect was ultimately located in the parking lot of the Mid-Carolina Country Club.
The country club’s general manager, Scott Crouch, stated that safety protocols were activated. He mentioned that air horns were sounded on carts to alert and gather people for safety.
As noted by authorities, the victim’s identity was not officially confirmed until late Monday afternoon. In response to the incident, the Newberry County School District placed Mid-Carolina High School and Mid-Carolina Middle School on lockdown. Additionally, Little Mountain, Pomaria-Garmany, and Prosperity-Rikard elementary schools were placed in Secure Mode.
School district officials announced that all campuses have since resumed normal activities, confirming that all students and staff are currently safe.
