Fatal shooting death of JoKayne Carter in Richland County

Richland County law enforcement officials have announced the identity of a 19-year-old male who died after being shot at an apartment complex. The incident occurred just over a day after two individuals were taken into custody regarding the death. The specific location was 1051 Southern Drive, identified as The Roost apartments.

Deputies from the Richland County Sheriff’s Office apprehended Tyron Shelley, aged 19, and Ta’John Goodwin, aged 20, within approximately 24 hours following the fatal shooting. The shooting victim was pronounced deceased at the scene around midday on Friday. Shelley was located at his residence in Earlewood. During a subsequent search, authorities recovered a firearm that had been reported stolen from Florence County. Goodwin voluntarily reported to the sheriff’s facility, with assistance from his family members.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office officially identified the deceased as JoKayne Carter, a 19-year-old individual. Ongoing police investigations aim to determine the underlying reason or motive for this violent incident. Although the privately-run apartment complex primarily serves college students, the University of South Carolina has confirmed that neither the deceased nor the suspects have any connection to the university or are currently enrolled students.

Sheriff’s officials indicated that this marked the 14th homicide case investigated by their department personnel this year. Notably, each of these cases resulted in an arrest, reflecting a pattern of successful follow-up to incidents.
