Fatal Lackawanna vehicle accident death of Darryl K. Jones.
The New York State Police announced Monday morning that a man was killed after being hit while walking on the westbound section of I-90. Officials stated that the deceased, identified as Darryl K. Jones, a 60-year-old from Yalaha, Florida, was involved in the incident shortly before 5 a.m. near Exit 57, which is also known as Route 75.
Investigators revealed that Jones had stepped onto the highway from a nearby lodging and was subsequently struck by a 2023 Kenwood semi-truck traveling against the flow of traffic. The driver initially thought they had collided with a deer and kept driving, but after reviewing the vehicle’s dashboard camera footage, they realized it was a person. Authorities were informed not long after the collision occurred.
Jones was discovered in a close-by ditch and was confirmed dead. Initially, the state police suggested the fatality could have been a deliberate act, but the ongoing examination showed no evidence of wrongdoing and that the scene aligned with an accidental incident. Various divisions of the New York State Police, including the Collision Reconstruction and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement teams, collaborated on the case.
