Fatal Coraopolis car crash death of John Joseph Volante

A 70-year-old man met his untimely end when he was hit by a large truck on Thursday afternoon in Coraopolis, representing the second fatal pedestrian incident in that area during this current month.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office officially identified the person who was hit as John Joseph Volante, who hails from Moon.

According to reports from the Coraopolis police chief, the truck was stopped at a red light at the junction of Fifth Avenue and Main Street earlier than 3 p.m. Once the light changed to green, the driver accelerated and collided with Volante.

The medical examiner’s office confirmed that Volante passed away right at the scene, with the death occurring precisely at 3:18 p.m.

WTAE, a TribLive news partner, described Volante as a well-recognized figure in the local community who frequently took his dog for walks.

This incident occurred just one day after another pedestrian, Ulises Montalvo, aged 61, was killed in a hit-and-run accident near Fourth Avenue. Montalvo, who was also a day laborer and commonly seen performing yard work and various odd jobs, died before he could be taken to a hospital.

Coraopolis mayor Michael Dixon expressed profound concern, stating in a Facebook post that these tragic events demand careful consideration from everyone. He instructed the local police to review the safety aspects of high-risk intersections, lighting, speed enforcement, and pedestrian safety protocols to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

In his statement, Dixon emphasized that safety depends on everyone, not just the government. He appealed to all drivers in Coraopolis to exercise caution, remain vigilant, and remember that expediting a few seconds is never a justifiable trade-off for a life lost.
