Law enforcement officials have determined the individual involved in the incident was identified.

The fatal shooting took place on a Sunday morning at 11:45 a.m. at the home of an off-duty Virginia State Police special agent located in the Bay Colony area. According to information released by the state police, initial reports indicated a 40-year-old man, confirmed as John Gregory Conner, approached the front door of the agent’s residence with intentions to force entry.

The agent confronted the individual and fired a shot, resulting in Conner’s death due to the injuries sustained. Police later reported that the off-duty officer provided medical assistance to Conner before emergency medical services responded to the scene.

The agent, who was not on active duty at the time, suffered minor injuries and received medical attention.

In accordance with standard procedures, the off-duty agent has been placed on administrative leave while authorities conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Residing in the Bay Colony neighborhood, which is typically regarded as a peaceful area, local residents expressed shock and concern over the event. Gerry Maciver, a long-term resident of the community, described her feelings as being overwhelmed by the situation. She added that the neighborhood, known for its strong sense of community and low crime rates, is now left with many unanswered questions.

It remains unclear whether the off-duty agent had any prior interaction with the deceased or what motivated the attempted break-in during daylight hours.
