On Sunday morning, a 60-year-old man, identified as Sookram, passed away due to injuries sustained in a collision on the Mocha Access Road in East Bank Demerara. Sookram, who was a local resident of Barr Street in the Kitty area of Georgetown, was involved in the incident. Police informed that the accident happened at approximately 06:30 hours, involving a vehicle with registration number PNN 5140 and a motorcycle with tag CP 4540.
Initial inquiries by law enforcement revealed that the driver of the car, a 25-year-old individual, was traveling eastbound on the road at a quick pace when it collided with Sookram, who was also moving in the same direction. The collision resulted in Sookram falling to the ground and suffering critical injuries. Police added that the driver did not stop after the crash and then left the scene.
Emergency medical personnel arrived to find Sookram unresponsive and transported him to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for urgent care. Despite the treatment, he died around 09:50 hours from his injuries. His body was then taken to the hospital’s mortuary for the time being, with a post-mortem examination scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
As part of the ongoing investigation, authorities arrested the driver and secured the vehicle at the Providence Police Station. Preliminary tests showed the driver’s blood alcohol content was within the range of .054% to .058%, and he is currently being held while further probes are conducted.
